It doesn't really change the advice, but I suspect OP feels ick about this and can't quite put their finger on why since they don't have any issue with the coworker specifically, just the inherent inequity of the situation.

The thing that still bugs me, although Alison has backpedaled to a degree over time, is the idea that policies are for children and being treated like adults in a workplace means everyone osmoses the workplace culture and standards and everything just works.
