I like the M14.CA BLACKFEATHER CHASSIS SYSTEM for my short, light, M14 builds. I prefer an 18.5" barrel over the 16", but either way they balance better and have better ergonomics. I kinda have the opposite problem, mine will engage and hold the bolt just fine, but won't release when pressed. I have to engage the charging handle, which isn't a huge deal. I will get an aftermarket catch and install that down the road but it's been a head scratcher. My gun is in a delta 14 chassis and I fear that's what's getting in the way.
