Lewis Cass met with approximately 3,000 members of the Potawatomi, Ojibwe (Chippewa), and Odawa (Ottawa) tribes. In the Treaty of Chicago, these tribes ceded nearly five million acres of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Michigan sent armed men to Toledo to defend its claim to the land. There was a little fighting and only one man was injured, but the whole fight became known as the Toledo War. Biography or Historical Note The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is charged with maintaining natural and cultural resources. The DNR was created in 1965 by the Executive Reorganization Act of 1965. In 2009, the DNR was combined with the Department of Environmental Quality and became the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE).
