Absolutely send a very brief and personal email to your top choice letting them know. Programs want applicants that want to be there. It can only help, as long as you don't make it too excessively long and you don't make it impersonal / come off as insincere.

what is a good number of papers to have my name on before clinicals? There is no good number. If you are going to do a research year, none is fine so long as you are able to actually get that research year.

No field comes close besides Neuro and Ortho, and those fields have much much harder lifestyles, longer residencies, and generally require you to work long hours. I think it's only for submitted publications but I've encountered a similar issue. I was told not to include anything that has only been submitted unless it is an actual full project being submitted to a peer reviewed journal. I don’t think an abstract should go on there personally.

Choosing to do a research is a very personal decision that no one else can make for you. Like you, I scored a 258 on Step 1 (not AOA or GH). I chose dermatology very late (spring MS3 year) and was weak on research because most of my papers were submitted, not accepted/published at the time ERAS was due.
It can be an interesting topic of conversation during interviews but otherwise it doesn't really matter. Research, grades, scores, faculty relationships >>>>>>>>>>>> derm extracurriculars > non-derm extracurriculars for applications. Outside of those top 4 things, just do what makes you happy and keeps you sane in medical school.Hey guys I recently started seriously considering Derm (previously had my mind on a surgical sub). I finished step 1 (P) and 2 (265-270) and am currently in the middle of my third year as my school had a faster preclinical and rotations were also done earlier.That’s basically what it was last year. It isn’t a crazy scramble to schedule though. There’s one day or a time frame where most programs will send out interviews, then you have an arbitrary time frame to accept them, and then the programs send out another wave of interviews.
