Factorio smelting setup.

For steel I normally just stack another standard smelter print on the output of one of my iron lines. I like what you did. What I would add is a buffer either for each furnace or for each output-belt, because if you don't do that the furnaces will stop running when entirely filled. The steel transfer I find really smart.

Sorting is a pain in the ass and you'll be tearing it down and rebuilding it several times. You eventually want catalyst sorting, which gets you exactly the ore you want with no extra ores and no slag. (you still get crushed stone though.) I believe the timing works out that there is a 1:1 relationship between Steel and Iron plate, so you can insert from 1 into the other directly, and just have belts for inserting ore.

So here, you have a net 4 saph ore (needs 2 to crush) to 2 iron plate ratio. Adding sorting turns into this: 2 ore -> crush = 2 crushed ore. 4 crushed ore -> sort = 2 iron ore, 1 copper ore. Smelting non-crushed ore is a 1:1 ratio, so ...

If you're using stone or steel furnaces, you're best off using the same setup for Steel as for Iron, just feeding iron plates instead of iron ore. The best bet, though, is to use electric furnaces with productivity modules. Steel is very Iron heavy: without productivity modules it takes 5 full iron belts to make one full steel belt.

Interestingly, the output of one iron-smelting furnace is the same as the input required for one steel-smelting furnace. For miners, just lay 'em down in rows and use undergroundies to make space for power poles - I toyed with the triangular layout for a while but decided I don't care that much about a small amount of extra potential speed at the cost of one side of each belt having twice as much ore as the other. But I use sideloading and in (0.16 prioritizing splitters) in order to set a priority of each smelting setup. Hopefully this makes beacon mining a bit more viable option in vanilla Factorio for anyone interested to try it! 50. 16.

With the current output potential of the full smelting process, I have to build a massive smelting configuration just to meet basic iron/copper demands. It doesn't scale well, unlike a vanilla furnace setup, where you just add a few more furnaces and extend the belts to meet new demand, the smelting mod requires re-configuring the layout, and ...

The mined compound ores have to be refined before you are able to smelt and cast them into plates. More advanced refining methodes will result in a higher yield of processed ores and may unlock new refined ores. There are 2 different modes currently: Vanilla mode, where you refine for iron, copper and uranium ore.
