Information pertaining to the function of ammonoid shells is generated by analogy to living cephalopods, by measurement or experiment designed to elucidate the properties of the ammonoid shell in life situations, and by examination of the distribution and sedimentary environments in which ammonoid fossils are preserved.Like octopus, squid, and cuttlefish, ammonites were cephalopods, though only their shells are preserved in the fossil record. In order to be fossilised, a dead ammonite would need to settle to the seabed, where it would be buried by sediment.
