In the Osage Cuestas, the underlying strata are Pennsyl- vanian-age limestones and shales that dip gently to the west and northwest. Each cuesta consists of a striking east-facing ridge or escarpment and a gently inclined surface that slopes in the direction of the dip of the strata.

While the Osage Cuestas were formed earlier during the Pennsylvanian and Permian periods, the Smoky Hills were formed from later deposits in the Cretaceous Period. The Smoky Hills change from east to west. The eastern hills are capped with sandstone. This means the top layer of rock is sandstone with other layers, or beds, of rock underneath.
