Muddy sandstone.

The northwest limb of the anticline is bounded by the North Como fault; a high-angle reverse fault. The exposed beds on the north flank are nearly vertical with some beds overturned in places. The resident bed of the Muddy Sandstone forms a northeastward-trending, well defined minor hogback that lies at a lower elevation than Como Ridge.

Valley-fill deposits of the Lower Cretaceous Muddy Sandstone contain significant stratigraphically trapped hydrocarbon accumulations and are an important exploration target in Wyoming's Bighorn, Powder River, and eastern Wind River basins. The Muddy Sandstone, although commonly less than 100 ft thick, is one of the most complicated formations in the Powder River basin. Utilizing an integrated sedimentologic and stratigraphic analysis of outcrop, core, and well logs, the Muddy can be divided into six isochronous members. The H3 muddy sandstone (Fig. 7 F) shows a higher quantity of detrital and pore-filling clay (20.4%) and small mud chips whereas the cleaner sandstone (Fig. 7 E) has 12.4% detrital clay. The muddy sandstone contains abundant detrital mica flakes (15.8%) that are preferentially concentrated over the upper part of the H3 division. The bed top is …and sandstone, while in centre of valleys the mud is dominant) concealed at places especially in the valleys and plain areas by the Subrecent and Recent fluvial, eolian and colluvial deposits.

The neutron-porosity log first appeared in 1940. It consisted of an isotopic source, most often plutonium-beryllium, and a single detector. Many variations were produced exploiting both thermal and epithermal neutrons. In most of the early tools, neutrons were not detected directly. Instead, the tools counted gamma rays emitted …Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized grains of mineral, rock or organic material.

Tengah Facies: Muddy marine sandstone with occasional grit beds and conglomerate. The member is usually deeply weathered but appears not to have been strongly lithified at any stage. St. John Facies: Flysch-like marine muddy fine sandstone with minor laminae of carbonaceous matter. Usually moderately well lithified.

Papa rock is a uniquely New Zealand term used to describe the widespread soft, blue-grey mudstone or muddy sandstone matrix classified as soft sedimentary rock. (Deriving from Papatūānuku, Mother Earth in Te Reo). This contrasts with the more solid volcanic rock formations found closer to the central plateau. Although the word papa is of ...

The Chace Quartzite Member and the underlying upper Bonney Sandstone consist of cross-bedded and petee-laminated medium- to coarse-grained sandstones and poorly sorted muddy sandstones, and have been interpreted as supratidal to intertidal and a fluvial-dominated deltaic system, respectively (e.g., Gehling, 2000, Gehling and Droser, …

This shift of the shoreline is reflected in the Tapeats Sandstone beach facies, Bright Angle Shale near-offshore mud facies, and Muav Limestone far-offshore facies. This muddy sandstone erodes irregularly, giving it a "wavy" appearance. This layer often erodes faster than the Entrada Sandstone above it, creating top heavy "mushroom" rocks. Mudstone. Mudstone, a type of mudrock, is a fine-grained sedimentary rock whose original constituents were clays or muds. Mudstone is distinguished from shale by its lack of fissility (parallel layering). [1] [2] The term mudstone is also used to describe carbonate rocks ( limestone or dolomite) that are composed predominantly of carbonate mud. [3]

However, the overlying nonmarine upper Muddy thickens northwestward, causing the underlying regressive sandstone to appear to be stratigraphically lower and, hence, older in that direction. The lowest, sixth Muddy sandstone is fluvial in origin, and the overlying fifth sandstone is a transgressive marine deposit. The fourth zone represents a fluvial origin below to shallow marine above. The third zone is interpreted to be of fluvial-overbank origin with possibly a bay-lagoonal association. The Muddy Sandstone, although commonly less than 100 ft thick, is one of the most complicated formations in the Powder River basin. The Muddy sandstone is a Lower Cretaceous sequence that was deposited on the east flank of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and southeastern Montana. The formation is characterized by variations in thickness and lithology as a result of recurrent movement on basement fault blocks during the Laramide orogeny.

Mud-poor sandstones and limestones are characteristically thinly bedded (3-10 em thick) in subhorizontal wavy- and lenticularly stratified units and, less commonly, in tabular cross-stratified sets. The typical flaggy appearance of these latter lithologies in outcrop reflects this thinly bedded stratification.

The Muddy Sandstone in Hilight field was deposited during a late Albian sea level rise. Continued particle settling results in the upward displacement of interstitial fluid and suspended fine-grained sediment and subsequently a low-density mud transforms the flow into a two-part suspension that deposits a bipartite bed.Sandstone that contains feldspar, which weathers more quickly than quartz, is useful for analyzing the local geologic history.
