Driving it the way it is will hurt it and there may be nothing wrong. 1st gear is a very low ratio and with light throttle pressure it will shift quickly into 2nd. With more throttle it should stay in first longer and at WOT shift later and hard enough to chirp the tires.

The 20-95 pushed the throttle cable attachment too far toward the fire wall which pulled the throttle cable too far out of the sheath.
