--after putting the nest back on, it ran for about 5min before e74 came up again. at that point I took the nest off, checked voltages, and the red wire was only putting out about 2v. Interestingly, i put the red/green wires together just to check and sure enough the fan kicked on after a minute.

No it works for typical heat / ac just fine. If you are using Rh, you will connect to C, R and W at the furnace. And the Rh and W wires from the thermostat connect to the other side of the adapter.
