Kill zombies, rip up all the clothing for ripped sheets and thread. The fastest way is from applying patches to clothing once you've got some thread, ripped sheets, and a needle. You get more thread as you level up tailoring too, early on you hardly get any while ripping up clothing. I stockpile thread and ripped sheets for practice on rainy days.

After 400h of playtime and no needles I installed a mod that lets me craft it with 1 level in tailoring and a nail/tweezers. Seemed fair since I play on CDDA and I had to tear trough hundreds of zombie clothes to get that one level. I love this game and I just hit 70 hours. I also have not found a needle.
