I run a paladin shield+golden halbert (+4) level 80 and it seems to work really well for me. I tried the grafted great sword but it just seemed to slow and not enough range. I even level it up to match the dmg of my halbert and nada. Same experience for me. The Flamberge in Demon's Souls is more historically accurate. They were very similar to Zweihanders, which literally means two handed sword. The only difference was the wavy flame like shape of the blade, though it was mostly decorative.
