It's only really worth it with 2 star boars imo. And also mainly for meat. Don't think you need all that many leather scraps. 1 stars are okay. Usually 2 meat per. Have 20, use 20 carrots, cull after they give birth (can just wait a little and kill half), rinse and repeat. Seems to feed our latest group (5) well.
