I bought a collection of ancient points, mostly "bird points" as the old timers called them, of what appears to be alibates, or tecovas stone.

Yep! The name "bird point" comes from the old timer arrowhead hunters. Plains tribes used light arrows with tiny points and a relatively light poundage bow (>50lb typically). Ancient arrows get their lethality and penetration power from velocity. A light arrow will perform better than a heavy one when shot from a 40lb primitive bow.
