The Contested Plains is a book that offers a substantial addition to our knowledge of the Colorado Gold Rush and how it affected the Cheyenne people. It is a book that is well-researched and well-argued, and it is a book that is well-named. In general, I think that Elliott West does a good job of making a compelling case for his thesis.

Good environmental history on power, vision, gold, horses, whites, Native Americans, and a neglected history of the plains. While West occasional launches into verbose antidotes on rock formations or temperature changes his book is a superb contribution to frontier history.
