I personally think that RAI, animal companions can still do things like shove or demoralize. Its just an issue of presenting that to the DM. I would rule it, that you need to train them to do it in downtime. I would also make the demoralise DC more of less difficult based on the size of the animal companion. Attack of Opportunity.
