Prospecting Pick using the Density Scan mode (has the contour map icon): The density mode only roughly shows you the chance of ore spawning in the chunk. It takes some getting used to becuase a higher chance does not equal more ore. I have often found ore where I did not expect it because the density scan gave a really low number (if at all).
