Alright so everyone is saying Assault rifles. But it's been statistically proven that Heavy SMG's are in fact the best average use gun for a normal colonist. Of course, it's situational, it's best to switch over to charge rifles once a pawn hits level 15, or is lvl 10 and had both eyes replaced with bionics.Sword is better against insected and unarmoured, mace often better against mechs and heavily armoured. For ranged its less clear and depends on the job. I think the best overall ranged weapon is charge rifle but there's a place for Charge lance, assault rifle, sniper rifle, minigun, heavy SMG, chain shotgun.

They may not have the best raw damage or penetration, but they have great range, accuracy and fire rate. Heavy SMG is also really strong at 12 tiles or less.
